What is Autism: Critical Features and Effective Strategies

Currently Sechuduled Workshops

Were sorry there are no current workshops offered at this time.

This presentation focuses on how to design effective educational environments for students with autism and other severe disabilities using the Pyramid Approach to Education. This approach allows for educators to create effective lessons in multiple settings using a broad array of teaching strategies. The model helps educators organize and prioritize their responsibilities in teaching critical functional skills as well as functional communication skills to students. The Pyramid Approach places an emphasis on creating rapidly effective lessons that promote communicative initiation by children to help minimize their dependence upon adults. Our orientation is aimed at promoting collaborative teams in which all members are competent teachers. How to set up this model within school settings (both public and private), homes, and in the general community is also discussed.

What You'll Learn:

  • How to identify and describe critical elements of an effective educational environment
  • How to identify key communication goals and promote them within school and home settings
  • Strategies for supporting staff to implement these elements and goals within home and classroom environments
  • About placement options and program designs for all age levels
  • An overview of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and additional visual strategies

Agenda: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
