New Article Written by Andy Bondy, Co-Developer of PECS

11/18/2012

We at Pyramid are excited to announce a new publication written by our very own Dr. Andy Bondy (co-developer of PECS and co-founder of Pyramid Educational Consultants) in the prestigious journal, The Psychological Record.  In his new article, The Unusual Suspects: Myths and Misconceptions Associated with PECS, Dr. Bondy, the recipient of the 2012 Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis International Dissemination Award, reviews the history of the development of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).  He notes the relationship between PECS and the field of applied behavior analysis.  In addition, he also reviews many of the myths and misconceptions associated with PECS and responds to each with theoretically sound and empirically validated points.  Click here to view the complete article.

PECS Phase III App-Now Available for iPad!

09/12/2012

Need help teaching picture discrimination in Phase III of PECS?  Download the PECS Phase III App for your iPad today!

The PECS Phase III App is an invaluable tool for teaching picture discrimination!  The app, designed to look just like a PECS Communication Book permits a teacher to practice picture discrimination with one or several learners within a single session.  Touching the correct icon results in immediate visual and auditory feedback from the device in a manner far quicker than a teacher is able to react.  If the learner touches an incorrect icon, there is no significant feedback.  A correct picture selection results in access to a desired item or activity!

This fantastic app comes loaded with 100 Pics for PECS images, male and female voices that include on/off options, and a customisable library that may be loaded with an individual's own pictures from their computer or iPad.

To purchase the PECS Phase III App for the low price of $9.99, visit the Apple iTunes App Store and search for "PECS Phase III."  If you are interested in finding out more about other apps created by Pyramid Educational Consultants, click here!

Are you a parent/caregiver of a child or adult who uses or has used PECS?

09/04/2012

Are you a parent/caregiver of a child or adult who uses or has used PECS?

A group from Monash University (Melbourne, Australia) is conducting a study about parents' use of PECS with their child during daily routines. The goal of the survey is to find out about the usefulness of PECS in improving children's communication skills, as well as understand when and how parents use PECS with their children. It is important to gain a greater understanding about PECS use so that recommendations can be made that may improve the usability of PECS.

Monash University would very much appreciate you taking the time to complete their survey and to forward this message to other people you may know who can complete the survey. If you agree to participate, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire that will take approximately 20-30 minutes and can be done in your own time. Your involvement is voluntary and your responses are completely anonymous. If you would like to participate in this important study, you can go directly to the survey by clicking the following link:

http://monasheducation.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_bmGXePLQ8zH6Xkg

A copy of group findings will be made available to participants upon request. If you wish to obtain further information about this research, please contact Anneke Jurgens via email at anneke.jurgens@monash.edu or phone at +61 403 590 721.

PECS Basic Training

This intensive two-day training is designed to teach participants the theory behind the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and the protocols for how to appropriately implement the six phases of PECS.

The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is used to rapidly teach communication skills to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training. Training in PECS begins by teaching a spontaneous request and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions and commenting. An added attraction for preschool children with autism and related disabilities is the high proportion of children who acquire independent speech. Participants will learn how to implement the six phases of PECS, plus attributes, through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role-play opportunities. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to implement PECS with individuals with autism, related developmental disabilities, and/or limited communication skills.

What You Will Learn:

    * The key Pyramid components to designing effective educational environments
    * Strategies to create an abundance of opportunities for communication

01/27/2011

R+ Remind™

Interested in an app that helps you remember to reinforce good behavior?

Pyramid Educational Consultants is thrilled to announce the release of our newest app for use on Apple® iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, R+ Remind™! This app is perfect for use in busy classrooms to remind all staff to catch your learners "being good!" It was created using research in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and from extensive input from busy educators. R+ Remind™ is a quick and easy way to help educators remember to reinforce good behavior!

To use R+ Remind™, simply open the app, select the average interval time desired and tap “start.” A tone unique to each interval sounds at a variable rate so that you can pause what you’re doing and reinforce a new behavior, the lack of a targeted behavior or even an existing behavior. Each tone is activated on a randomized, variable schedule (the 3-minute tones sounds on average every 3 minutes). R+ Remind™ allows the user to choose from 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15-minute intervals and includes a countdown, allowing the user to glance at the screen to know when the next tone will sound.

R+ Remind™ is now available and can be purchased through Apple® iTunes App Stores worldwide for download on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch! For more information about R+ Remind™, please visit the Apple iTunes App Store and search for “R+ Remind”.

We've developed five Story Book Kits for several books we think are perfect. Each kit includes an Activity Board with hook Velcro®, a large Sentence Strip™, all the laminated 1 3/4" pictures for both requesting and commenting activities, including a variety of Sentence Starters.
